What The FAQ?

Balcom&Nobody is a one-man design shop and blog, founded by Clint Balcom. Clint is a (wanna-be) photographer, (faux) musician, and every now and then a bum. He digs coding, markup, and web standards (is this where I snort?), Mac Stuff (oh right, snort goes here), design, and guitar. He spends his free time diddling his wooden girlfriend (a sexy Martin OM-42), enjoying good booze, eating Clif™ Bars, being neither hip nor square, holding doors because it's polite, laughing at racist jokes, staying in when he's supposed to go out, and trying to bribe anyone who can get him on Augusta National one day.

He lives in New York, works as the Creative Director of [212]MEDIA, founded bn some time ago, and more recently is the designer behind Snooth. But you didn't hear it from me. Us? Oh, right... him.

Oof. There's More?

Why yet another site... and what the shit is a colophon anyway?

No particular reason except for my obvious inferiority complex and insatiable need for reinvention — at least digitally. I guess the main reason is because I've always had a strong love of typography, but never let it show through in my (personal) designs. So this time around every pixel was agonized, every letter kerned properly, and every line-height set with love. It's a grid-based design for the most part, with some liberties here and there.

More to the point, the headings and nav are all set in varying sizes and treatments of the oft-forgotten Palatino — one of the few relatively web-safe fonts not beaten to death — and the rest in old faithful Arial. There's also a spattering of Gotham and Clarendon here and there if you're lucky...

Do you look away from the screen at all?

Not as often as I'd like. But on those rare occasions I can find a little play time, I fancy myself an amateur musician, photographer, unabashed food, wine, and beer snob, and something of a savant for movie lines. There was a time when I was a scratch golfer — not quite true these days — and I play a decent game of 9-ball.

Do you hate old people and/or children?

Not as much as I used to.

Lemme guess... made on a Mac?

As much as I'd love to say this site actually runs on Clif™ Bars and/or Apple Jacks™, alas it does not. In fact, it runs on a totally custom Wordpress install built from scratch. It was conceived with some combination of a notebook, a mechanical pencil, my trusty iMac, a blank Photoshop canvas, and was hand-coded via TextMate. It's hosted by (mt) MediaTemple.

Can I hire you?

That all depends on your project and your creativity. We're "technically" off the market for new work at the moment — we have plenty to keep us busy at [212]MEDIA — but that shouldn't preclude you from getting in touch anyway. I've been known to be easily bribable!
